Hard Vrocht Grun Project

War Horses on parade in Stonehaven

The Doric “Hard Vrocht Grun” translates to “hard fought ground” or “hard worked ground”, a reference to the price paid in blood for ground won and lost in trench warfare during the First World War, and to the tough farming conditions in Aberdeenshire.

The Hard Vrocht Grun project was undertaken by Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives in 2014 in partnership with the local Council’s education department, libraries, registrars and museums, as well as local history societies in Aberdeenshire and several local schools. Its purpose was to create a comprehensive secondary schools education resource based on local archives, exploring the local impact of the First World War.

The result is a wide-ranging and practical resource based on original sources and using innovative active learning approaches.DOWNLOAD ALL
