Enquiry learning is an educational approach that invites students to learn through enquiry, discussion and research based on insightful questioning. It differs from more traditional ‘directed learning’ approaches where information is presented in a linear fashion for memorising and recalling at a later time.
Both these approaches to learning have their place in education, but enquiry learning is particularly useful for archives-based education because of the incomplete nature of much of original source material and the value of exploring different possibilities in historical research.
Our Enquiry Learning workshop outlines this educational approach and explores its application through the ‘Hard Vrocht Grun’ World War One secondary schools resources developed by the Heritage Education Partnership in Aberdeenshire in 2013-2014.
