Community archives feature in new films from Scottish Council on Archives

18 October 2023

The Scottish Council on Archives (SCA) has released three short films highlighting its recent work helping community groups with their archives.

Over the last 20 months, SCA has been working with community groups across Scotland, learning about the challenges and opportunities around managing a small archive, and helping groups to manage and promote their collections with bespoke training. The films feature three of these groups: Scottish Jewish Archives Centre in Glasgow, and Cramond Heritage Trust and granton:hub in Edinburgh. Archivists Elspeth Reid and Jenny Duffy were contracted by SCA to work with these groups and six others to help in areas such as cataloguing, copyright, collections management, digitisation and storage.

John Pelan, Director of SCA, said “SCA has learned so much from working with different community and heritage groups. Each group has its own particular needs, and we have tried to respond to those with individually tailored training sessions. Scotland’s community archives offer a rich treasure of local history and heritage.”

The films are part of the Everyone’s Stories Matter project, SCA’s contribution to the AHRC-funded Outreach to Ownership initiative by Historic England and Historic Environment Scotland.

The three films were produced by Cinetopia Productions.
