Getting to Grips with Photographic Collections Webinar Series

SCA Preservation Committee is pleased to announce our latest webinar series: Focus on Photography.

From identifying photographic type and how to care for them to dating images through fashion, these sessions will explore many different aspects of managing photographs in archive collections. Designed for archivists and anyone with photographs in their collection, the webinars will give practical advice from experts, and offer guidance on caring, storing, and cataloguing items.

Each session takes place on Zoom and run for around thirty minutes, featuring a short presentation with plenty of opportunity for your questions.

Previous sessions:

Session One: Getting to Grips with Your Photographic Collection

Session Two: Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes and Tintypes

Session Three: Photographic Prints

Session Four: Negatives

Session Five: Preservation

Our first five sessions were given by Susie Clark ACR ICON.

Session Six: Dating Photos Through Costume with Dr Alison Rosie (Registrar, National Register of Archives for Scotland)

In the absence of information from photographic type or studio, a knowledge of the general outlines of costume history can be very useful in helping pin down the date of a photograph. This talk will give an overview of the main trends in fashion over the decades from the 1860s to the 1940s with tips for what to look out for.
