First Steps: Caring for Community Archives Workshop

The results of SCA’s community archives survey showed there is a desire for training in basic conservation, cataloguing and digital preservation while creating a network of resources to support people working with community archives. First Steps: Caring for Community Archives was organised to give participants a basic introduction to managing community archives.

SCA joined with National Records of Scotland to provide an enjoyable and informative day starting with a hands-on workshop with NRS conservators on the handling, storage and environment of documents and photographic material, followed by presentations from NRS experts on cataloguing, digitisation and digital preservation.

The presentations from the day are included below, and have lots of informative suggestions and links to resources.

The workshop was held initially in Edinburgh, before travelling to Inverness, Aberdeen, Oban, Hawick, and Perth. It will also take place in Stornoway in March 2020. For more information on the tour, click here.
