SCA Announces A Year in the Life of a Community Archive 2025 Featuring Ness Historical Society

16 April 2025

The Scottish Council on Archives (SCA) is delighted to announce that the 2025 edition of A Year in the Life of a Community Archive will shine a well-deserved spotlight on Ness Historical Society (Comunn Eachdraidh Nis), a vibrant and dedicated community archive based in the Outer Hebrides.

Now in its fourth year, this leading project offers a unique, in-depth look at the vital role of community archives in preserving and sharing Scotland’s diverse local histories. Following the success of last year’s collaboration with the Museum of Scottish Railways, the 2025 edition will document a year in the life of Ness Historical Society – capturing its day-to-day work, community engagement, and the care and commitment that go into protecting the heritage of North Lewis.

Founded over 40 years ago and maintained by a devoted group of local volunteers, Comunn Eachdraidh Nis has grown into a rich resource for those exploring the history, language, and culture of the Ness area. The archive holds far more than historical documents – it is a living reflection of the community’s identity and resilience, with a strong focus on Gaelic heritage.

Throughout the year, A Year in the Life of a Community Archive will feature regular blog posts, interviews, photo essays, and social media updates highlighting the many aspects of the Society’s work – from cataloguing historical records to hosting community events and educational outreach.
