First Steps: Caring for Community Archives – Hawick

After the success of our workshop earlier this year in Edinburgh, Scottish Council on Archives and National Records of Scotland are collaborating with archive services across the country, to bring the First Steps: Caring for Community Archives workshop to as many people as possible.

With our friends at Scottish Borders Archive and Local History Service in Hawick, we have put together a full and informative day, to inspire and assist anyone working with community archive collections. We will start with a hands-on workshop with conservators on the handling, storage and environment of documents and photographic material, followed by presentations from experts on cataloguing, digitisation and digital preservation. The event will provide attendees with an insight into basic data protection and copyright legislation, explain how the Scottish Borders Archive can provide support to community archives, and for you to meet and network with others celebrating their local heritage.

It will be an opportunity to meet the experts, ask questions and debate the needs of community archives. You’ll learn something new, and take away new ideas to try out on your own archive collections.

The workshops will also allow participants to meet other like-minded people in the same area working on other local heritage projects. The workshops are an opportunity to meet the experts, ask questions and debate the needs of community archives, and provide plenty of inspiration. The workshops are for anyone working or volunteering with community archive and heritage groups, and no prior knowledge is necessary.

We are running this workshop across Scotland, with other dates in Inverness, Aberdeen, Oban, and Stornoway planned.
