MEET THE FUNDERS: PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION

Learn about sources of funding for the preservation and conservation of your collections

The SCA Preservation and Conservation Committee hosted a half-day event for those interested in learning more about how to access external funding for the preservation and conservation of collections.

It was an opportunity to learn about various grants and funding streams available as well as advice on how increase your chances of accessing funding. There was a question and answer session where advice and guidance came directly from the funders. Presentations can be found below.

 

Linda Ramsay, SCA Trustee and Preservation Committee Convener

Statements of significance – using significance assessments to look at your collections from a new perspective and articulate the value of your collections to funders.

Nell Hoare, Secretary, The National Manuscripts Conservation Trust

Nell will talk about the funding available from NMCT, which awards grants for the conservation of manuscripts.  Nell will also briefly talk of the grants Friends of the National Libraries awards for the acquisition of manuscripts, rare books and fine bindings.

Alison Mason, Highland Archive Service

 Offering a fascinating insight into life on a small Highland estate and covering themes such as the clearances, the development of the crofting system and the impact of the world wars; the collection was in particular need of conservation work to make it accessible to researchers.

Chris Hassan, Portfolio Manager, Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust offers Research Resources Grants of up to £500,000 to improve access to health-related library and archive collections across the UK and Republic of Ireland by supporting cataloguing, conservation and digitisation projects.

Bruno Longmore, Head of Archive Depositor Liaison, National Records of Scotland

Examines NRS experience of applying for Wellcome Trust funding, the funded project, its impact, benefits, outcomes and lessons learned.
