Skills & Education: Contributing to Scotland

In March 2015, we held a high-profile advocacy event at the Scottish Parliament.  This took the form of an exhibition and information booth in the Members’ Lobby where we aimed to represent the archive sector by presenting a positive, inspiring and diverse message to senior government. The core aims of the events were to improve understanding of archives, notably how this area of heritage is tackling skills gaps (including bringing in skills from outside the sector) and harnessing expertise, creativity and innovation to support the Curriculum for Excellence.

The exhibition of original archive materials made possible by the National Records of Scotland, was complemented by image panels and a large-scale graphic map of Scotland comprising images from over 70 archive collections. SCA’s presence at Holyrood also focussed on the work completed and underway in archives relating to the areas of education and skills, with a particular emphasis on promoting the Opening Up Scotland's Archives Skills for the Future traineeships.

You can find out more about the exhibition, visit our online map and see how our trainees participated below. You can also download our specially produced archives education annual of the magazine, Broadsheet, featuring some inspiring work underway throughout Scotland.
