John Pelan took on the role of Director of the Scottish Council on Archives in December 2017.  John provides organisational leadership for SCA and, working with trustees, staff and stakeholders, develops its strategic direction.

John has worked in the culture and heritage sectors in Scotland for several decades. Prior to joining SCA he was Director of the Scottish Civic Trust and previously held senior positions with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland including Depute Secretary and Director of Communications. John is passionate about archives and the role they have in fostering a sense of identity and engagement with the past.


     Victoria Brown, Programmes and Development Manager

Victoria Brown began working for the Scottish Council on Archives in 2010. Victoria manages the Council’s programme of organisational projects across education and skills, research and standards, and advocacy and development. Victoria also acts as the co-ordinator and secretariat for the Scottish Council on Archives Preservation and Education Committees.

Originally from Canada, Victoria studied History at the University of Guelph and completed postgraduate studies in Archives and Records Management at the University of Dundee. Victoria has previously worked for the East Lothian Museums Service, the Royal London Group, City of Edinburgh Council’s Education and Information Service for Schools, and at the National Records of Scotland.



      Douglas Roberts, Education Development Officer

Douglas Roberts is an experienced former teacher with a background in primary teaching, secondary English and History, and teacher training. Douglas now works as an education consultant and specialises in active learning approaches using drama techniques, debate, and enquiry learning, and for ten years ran a theatre education company in Scotland and New Zealand.

As the Council’s Education Development Officer, Douglas co-ordinates a programme of activities aligned with our National Plan for Learning 2012-15. Douglas undertakes the research and development of curriculum based resources using archive materials, facilitates workshops and training opportunities for archive staff, and carries out consultancy and review of history and heritage education projects.


      Audrey Wilson, Community Engagement Officer

As a trained conservator, Audrey has worked for organisations ranging from the Royal Opera House, London, to the State Library of New South Wales. She was the Senior Conservator at the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and went on to establish her own business, Conservation Consortium Scotland in Edinburgh.

Following the successful delivery of the HLF funded Skills for the Future project, Opening Up Scotland’s Archive, Audrey is now working to build on the project's legacy, widening participation and engagement with archives. Audrey is also working closely with community archives and local history groups, to encourage their sustainability and development.


       Robert Wright, Communications and Operations Officer

Robert Wright joined the Scottish Council on Archives in 2016. He supports the Programmes and Development Manager to deliver the Council’s communications and events programme and the running of the office.  With a background in museums and education, Robert has experience of mediating cultural heritage to a variety of audiences.

Originally studying Classics, Robert undertook postgraduate study in English literature at the University of Edinburgh, where he also taught.  He has previously worked for Edinburgh University Library, Lloyds Banking Group Archives and the Museum on the Mound
